What are Open Research Data and Open Research Software?

Research data includes measurement data, laboratory values, audiovisual information, interviews, texts, survey data, objects from collections or samples that are generated, developed or analysed in the course of scientific work. Methodological test procedures, questionnaires, software and simulations can also be categorised as research data.

Research software refers to basic algorithms, source code and associated documentation, tests and executable files as well as scripts and digital workflows that were created during development, either as part of the research process or explicitly for it.

Research data and software are described as open if they have been made available to the public under a free licence, i.e. anyone may use the data or software for their own purposes.

Why Open Research Data and Open Research Software?

Research data ranges from raw experimental data to highly processed data, such as that often used in traditional publications. For research to remain credible, this process must be traceable and ideally reproducible. In order to be able to independently verify research, it is necessary to be able to access all data generated in the research process and to be able to inspect and use the tools (usually software) used for this purpose.
