Why Open Hardware?

Open Research Hardware describes physical objects or devices that have been developed as part of the research process or explicitly for research and whose blueprints are in the public domain so that anyone can study, modify, redistribute and build and use hardware based on them.

Activities in the field of Open Hardware at the University of Jena

  • Light workshop

With the Light Workshop, the university operates an open makerspace for the use of photonic technologies. Regularly organised events such as hackathons also offer the opportunity to initiate and further develop open research hardware in interdisciplinary teams.
