Joint Appointments

Joint appointments connect Jena’s research ecosystem with strong partnerships well beyond the region.

Joint appointments advance interdisciplinary research, create excellent opportunities for early career researchers, and strengthen the University’s academic profile.

The close interconnectedness of Jena’s research ecosystem creates an environment in which interdisciplinary research and scholarly exchange can thrive. This is further enhanced by the high concentration of non-university research institutions in Jena and the surrounding region, as well as by the shared use of modern research infrastructure.

At the same time, the University takes a deliberately outward-looking approach to joint appointments. Strategic partnerships with institutions beyond Jena — for example in Berlin, Halle and Leipzig — broaden the academic spectrum, create new opportunities for collaboration, and deepen the University’s integration into national and international research networks.

Joint appointments also make a direct contribution to teaching by enriching degree programmes with new thematic areas and contemporary research questions. For early career researchers, they create additional opportunities for academic development, networking, and the development of a distinct scholarly profile.
