Universities are places of learning, research and work, where people from different walks of life come together. Recognizing gender and sexual diversity is an important part of a university culture that is open and sensitive to discrimination. Studies show that LGBTIQ* people can still face discrimination, prejudice or uncertainty in their everyday lives as students and staff. A respectful and inclusive environment helps to strengthen the participation of all members of the university community, counteract discrimination and ensure equal opportunities in study, research, teaching and employment.

The University of Jena is therefore committed to establishing structures and services that promote visibility, participation and empowerment. These include, amongst other things, advisory services and consultations, taking diverse ways of life into account in administration and communication, and fostering networks and opportunities for exchange. The aim is to create a university community in which diversity is seen as an asset and where everyone can freely and autonomously develop their personality and identity.

Friedrich Schiller University Jena sees it as its duty to create a framework in which gender and sexual diversity are recognized as a matter of course and can be lived openly. The university should be a place where people, regardless of their gender identity, gender expression or sexual orientation, can move about in their study and work environments without shame or fear of discrimination, and can exercise their rights. In particular, trans*, inter* and non-binary people, as well as lesbian, gay, bisexual, asexual, queer and other LGBTIQ* people, should experience appreciation, respect and equal opportunity.
