The Romance Studies degree programme imparts linguistic, literary and cultural skills in relation to the (subject) area|field of Romance languages. It introduces you to the working methods and subjects of linguistics, literature and cultural studies, with a particular focus on the chosen focus, i.e. the French language and the Francophone linguistic and cultural area. In addition to the necessary specialised knowledge, you will learn how to deal with texts academically and how to speak and write about them professionally. In the process, you will develop the ability to carry out independent academic work. In addition to developing language skills in French, you will acquire basic knowledge of other Romance languages.
A wide range of courses enables you to deepen your knowledge of French literature and language as well as French and Francophone culture (music, film, etc.).
Multi-subject bachelor’s programme
Picture: Sophie BartholomeThe Bachelor's degree is the first professional qualification. The standard period of study|regular programme length is six semesters in total, during which various forms of courses (e.g. seminars, lectures or tutorials) are offered for the individual modules.
A multi-subject Bachelor's degree consists of a major subject with 120 credit points (abbreviation: LP / 1 LP = 30 hours of attendance, preparation and follow-up work|follow-up activity, coursework and examinations) and a supplementary subject with 60 LP.
Field trips|study trips and internships round off your studies, give you an initial insight into typical professional fields and provide you with your first contacts in the world of work.
The degree programme is designed in such a way that it can also be completed within the standard period of study|regular programme length with a one-semester stay abroad.

The methodological skills you have acquired, as well as your practical and social skills, are in demand, especially in the education, culture and media sectors, as well as in tourism and other related areas.
If you are fascinated by the French language and culture and have a genuine interest in other countries and intercultural exchange, you already have the most important requirements.
A university entrance qualification, such as a general secondary school leaving certificate, is required for admission onto the study programme.

Knowledge of French at level A2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (a placement test will be carried out before the start of studies)
Basic knowledge of Latin (should be made up in the 1st year of study); the University Language Center offers a course “Latin for Romanists”.
Knowledge of another foreign language. Proof by the time of registration for the Bachelor's thesis at the latest.
