Programme content
The Romance Studies degree programme imparts linguistic, literary and cultural skills related to the (subject) area|field of Romance languages. It introduces you to the working methods and subjects of linguistics, literature and cultural studies, with a particular focus on the chosen focus, i.e. the French language and the Francophone linguistic and cultural area.
In addition to the necessary specialised knowledge, you will learn how to deal with texts academically and how to speak and write about them professionally. In the process, you will develop the ability to carry out independent academic work. In addition to developing language skills in French, you will acquire basic knowledge of other Romance languages. A wide range of courses enables you to deepen your knowledge of French literature and language as well as French and Francophone culture (Music, film, etc.).
Structure
Multi-subject bachelor’s programme
Picture: Sophie BartholomeThe Bachelor's degree is the first professional qualification. The standard period of study|regular programme length is six semesters in total, during which various forms of courses (e.g. seminars, lectures or tutorials) are offered for the individual modules.
A multi-subject Bachelor's degree consists of a major subject with 120 credit points (abbreviation: LP / 1 LP = 30 hours of attendance, preparation and follow-up work|follow-up activity, coursework and examinations) and a supplementary subject with 60 LP.
Field trips|study trips and internships round off your degree programme, give you an initial insight into typical professional fields and provide you with your first contacts in the world of work.
It is recommended that you spend at least one semester in a French-speaking country during your studies. The course is designed in such a way that it can also be completed within the standard period of study|regular programme length with a one-semester stay abroad. You have the opportunity to study in a French-speaking foreign country as part of the LLP/Erasmus programme.

Authentic French materials are covered in the academic course|classes so that you are constantly in contact with the French language. International conferences, readings and talks by authors and lectures by French guest lecturers are organised regularly. There is also a wide tender of creative and continuing education activities where you can practise and deepen your knowledge of French in a variety of ways.
- Learn other languages: In addition to French, you can also acquire language skills in four other Romance languages at the Institute of Romance Studies de: Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Romanian.
- Digital media skills: Digitalisation is increasingly shaping everyday life and will be a constant companion in your professional life. For this reason, we organise various projects at the Institute of Romance Studies so that you not only acquire expertise|specialist knowledge, but can also use digital media professionally and reflectively in your everyday professional life.
- Adventures abroad: You can easily fulfil your dream of a semester abroad de. Our university has a worldwide network of partner universities. Every foreign language is best perfected directly in the target language country. Not only will you get to know the Spanish language and culture at first hand, but you will also gain an insight into the Spanish-speaking university and education system.

A university entrance qualification, such as a general secondary school leaving certificate, is required for admission onto the study programme.

Language requirements
Knowledge of French at level A2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (placement test before the start of the course)
Basic knowledge of Latin (should be made up in the 1st year of study); a course “Latin for Romance Studies” is offered at the University Language Center.
Knowledge of another foreign language. Proof by the time of registration for the Bachelor's thesis at the latest.
