The Romance Studies degree programme imparts linguistic, literary and cultural skills related to the (subject) area|field of Romance languages. It introduces you to the working methods and subjects of linguistics, literature and cultural studies, with a particular focus on the chosen focus, i.e. the Italian language and the Italophone linguistic and cultural area. In addition to the necessary specialised knowledge, you will learn how to deal with texts academically and how to speak and write about them professionally. In the process, you will develop the ability to carry out independent academic work. In addition to developing language skills in Italian, you will also acquire basic knowledge of other Romance languages.
A wide range of courses enables you to deepen your knowledge of the Italian language and literature as well as Italian and Italophone culture (music, film, etc.).
Multi-subject bachelor’s programme
Picture: Sophie BartholomeThe Bachelor's degree is the first professional qualification. The standard period of study|regular programme length is six semesters in total, during which various forms of courses (e.g. seminars, lectures or tutorials) are offered for the individual modules.
A multi-subject Bachelor's degree consists of a major subject with 120 credit points (abbreviation: LP / 1 LP = 30 hours of attendance, preparation and follow-up work|follow-up activity, coursework and examinations) and a supplementary subject with 60 LP.
Field trips|study trips and internships round off your degree programme, give you an initial insight into typical professional fields and provide you with contacts in the world of work.
It is recommended that you spend at least one semester in an Italian-speaking country during your studies. The degree programme is designed in such a way that it can also be completed within the standard period of study|regular programme length with a one-semester stay abroad.

The methodological skills you have acquired, as well as your practical and social skills, are in demand, especially in the (subject) areas|field of education, culture and media, as well as in tourism and other related areas.
If you are fascinated by the Italian language and culture and have a genuine interest in other countries and intercultural exchange, you already have the most important requirements.
Although knowledge of Italian before the programme start|start of studies is an advantage, it is not essential. You can also start and successfully complete a degree programme without any prior knowledge of Italian.
A university entrance qualification, such as a general secondary school leaving certificate, is required for admission onto the study programme.

No knowledge of Italian is required to start the course. If you already have language skills, please take the placement test which takes place before the start of your studies.
Basic knowledge of Latin (should be made up in the 1st year of study); the University Language Center offers a course “Latin for Romanists”.
Knowledge of another foreign language. Proof by the time of registration for the Bachelor's thesis at the latest.

Proof of sufficient German proficiency must be provided for all German-language degree programmes. The following certificates are recognized as proof of proficiency by Friedrich Schiller University Jena:
Please note: We strongly recommend that you submit the required proof of German proficiency at the time of your application.
If you do not yet have the required language certificate, you may apply for our DSH course starting from German level B1. This course ensures optimal language preparation and also gives you the opportunity to get to know Jena while benefiting from student status.
A translation into German or English must be submitted for every application document that was not originally issued in German or English. These translations must be prepared by an authorized translation office.
Applicants with university degrees from India, Vietnam, or the People’s Republic of China must submit an APS certificate.
