Structure

As a future teacher, you will study two subjects on an equal footing and round off your pedagogical profile with an accompanying Educational Science programme. A total of 300 credit points (ECTS)|ECTS credits (1 ECTS = 30 hours of attendance, preparation and follow-up work|follow-up activity, study and assessed coursework and examinations) must be completed. The cooperation with the Bauhaus University Weimar makes it necessary to commute between Weimar and Jena. In the double degree programme, the subject of art can be combined with all other teacher training subjects offered for grammar schools at Friedrich Schiller University Jena.

Art can also be studied as a double subject. In this case, the second teacher training subject is omitted and only Educational Science is studied in Jena.

The requirement for admission to the degree programme is passing the admission test|aptitutute test as proof|evidence of special artistic or creative competence|qualification. Registration for the admission test|aptitute test at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is usually required by 31 March for the following winter semester. Please find more information hereExternal link.

What can you do after your studies?

Career opportunities:

  • General education: The typical route into school practice is via the preparatory service (traineeship). In this phase, you will further develop your practical teaching skills on the basis of your degree.

  • Adult education: Outside of the school system, opportunities to work as a teacher are open to you in the subject) area|field of adult education.

The German Grammar School Teacher Training (Gymnasium) double degree in Arts Education completed in Thuringia is recognised|to credit in all other federal states. The double degree in Arts Education is only recognised|to credit in a few federal states (Thuringia, Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia, Berlin). In order to increase the chances of employment for double-subject students, it is recommended that they study a supplementary subject.

What are we looking for in prospective students?

They should have a fundamental openness towards experimental forms of creative-artistic teaching as well as a reflective examination of their own work process. A connection to school practice is just as important as proximity to current art developments. Creativity, self-employed individuals|freelancers, linguistic expression and flexibility are necessary competences for a successful degree programme. In order to cope with the demands of the programme, it is important to develop an artistic identity as well as an art education habitus. Studying at two locations requires a high degree of organisational ability in drawing up the curriculum and the willingness to network acquired knowledge and skills in an interdisciplinary manner.
