Essays on Intergenerational and International Mobility

Beschreibung / Description: 
Dieser wunderbare Hut wurde gebastelt vom unglaublich tollen Team des Lehrstuhls für Finanzwissenschaft, an dem ich knapp 5 Jahre tätig war. Der Hut spiegelt sowohl Themen meiner Dissertation als auch beliebte Freizeitaktivitäten meinerseits wider.

So z.B. spiegelt die Treppe mit den zwei Menschen das Thema intergenerationelle Mobilität wider. Hier wird versucht seine Nachfahren sozioökonomisch besser zu stellen, als man es selbst war – die Nachfahren also möglichst hoch auf der Leiter anzusiedeln.

Die Weltkarte mit Pinnnadeln zeigt die unterschiedlichen Standorte, die ich auf meinem wissenschaftlichen Werdegang (Studium und Vorträge) genommen habe und ist somit auch symbolisch für die „internationale Mobilität“. Das ist das zweite Thema meiner Dissertation, genauer geht es um die Ansiedlung von internationalen Studierenden in Deutschland.

Außerdem sind auf dem Hut ein Miniaturhochbeet mit echten Pflanzen und eine eingerollte eine Essenskarte angebracht, die meine Leidenschaft für das Gärtnern (mit Hochbeet!) und Essen zeigen sollen.

Die „Kette“ um den Hut herum besteht aus Tennisbällen und zeigt damit meinem Lieblingssport Tennis. Außerdem sind auf den Hut noch Auszüge meiner veröffentlichten Artikel geklebt sowie eine Gutscheinkarte vom Cafe Rossi, da ich dieses häufig für Kaffee aufgesucht habe.

Adaptor Protein Complex 5-Related Hereditary Spastic Paraplegias

Beschreibung / Description:
The doctoral hat is describing my PhD time in the lab of Human Genetics (UKJ). My thesis was mainly focused on microscopy and live cell imaging, as well as animal experiments. Therefore, one can see the fluorescent objects, as well as the mouse with the modified DNA (thanks to the UV lamp on the hat). The zombie mouse at the desk, which has several books and very long to do lists on it, represents me during my PhD time. I was working very hard and also during the weekend, wherefore I transformed into a zombie. The project was also growing and growing, wherefore the list of things to do got longer and longer. Additionally, you can also see a dog on this hat. During my PhD I got my dog, Flocke, a street dog from Romania. I was talking a lot about him and many of my colleagues met him - that's why he got a special place on this hat.
As I am Italian, coffee, pizza and pasta couldn't miss in my office, as well as on my hat. To combine it with my biological background, they created a “nucelus pizza”.

Second-Order Nonlinear Frequency Generation in Nanostructured Surfaces

Beschreibung / Description:
This magnificent and well thought-through hat was created and realised by my colleagues of the Nano&Quantum Optics group. Many thanks!

It is a remarkable fit to my many endeavors that I had to survive during my PhD time.

I cycle to work every day, no matter the weather or temperature outside, so the base of the hat is a cycling helmet. This theme is also paving the way over the hat plate letting me cycle from station to station, accompanied by my child, who was born during my doctorate.

I am playing some music on the accordion and the cajon to get my mind of physics if needed, which is displayed on the hat. I am also a little nostalgic, so they added a tape which I had to put into this old cassette tape recorder and get it working. To the surprise of my younger colleagues, who could not manage it, I did it without problems (I am not that old…^^). The tape was playing the anthem of my favorite football club, 1. FC Union Berlin, which I immediately sang through the whole lecture hall for everybody to hear. Additionally, some decoration on posters and papers (yes, I am an analog newspaper reader), a no-cake-sign (because I brought fruits instead of cake), an anti-google sign (because I try to avoid it) and trees to represent my love for nature.

Another task was the maze, an visualization of a stadium covered by some nanostructures that I investigated, containing three balls to find their hole. Not only did I succeed, I also explained the problems of publishing while handling the balls. If one ball seems fine, another jumps away again, similar to the publishing, where you have to get your own expectations on science, data and results, the opinions of your collaborators and those of the reviewers in line. A seemingly impossible task.  

At all positions, I had to spin the wheel of fortune, or the “peanut roulette” as it might be called in Russian. Since I have a peanut allergy, this is a reminder of my health issue. Content-wise, it  collects my connections into the world represented by food. I had to answer quite difficult questions: What is the difference between Dresdener and Freiberger Eierschecke? What is prize for the winner of the annual baguette contest in France? How long was the longest hand-made noodle? … At all questions, I was not far off.

To finish the hat, the tassel is a Sheriff’s batch, because I kept order (and peace) to the group, the institute and the univers(ity), as far as I know.

Please, vote for my hat! It is a great example of team work, an astonishing example of a harmonic work atmosphere, and a huge honor for me to receive: this incredible piece of art! Thank you!

Alles, was mich in der Promotionsphase beim Erklimmen des „Golden Hill“ begleitet hat, ist dabei: Mein Fahrrad, auf dem ich alle Wege zurücklegte, das viele Softeis an der Bude in der Johannisstraße, der Garten auf dem Land, Yoga, um den vom vielen Sitzen müden Rücken aufzuwecken und natürlich meine beiden Katzen, die überall mitmischen.

DARLING: Deep leARning for chemicaL Information processinG

Beschreibung / Description:
When my PhD defence took place, one of my favourite moments was when my friends crowned me as a doctor. (My friend Otto did it.) Moreover, I was so touched by the love my friends showed me that day. That day will remain in my memory forever. A few of my friends travelled far from Germany and even within the country to attend the defence. A few people cried when the title was announced, which I will never forget. Such happiness is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, I would say. Thanks in particular to Mahnoor Zulfiqar, Adelene Lai, Otto Brinkhaus, and Jonas Schaub, who all made my hat. Jonas was the one I missed the most on that day because he had to be sick after these long days and could not attend (I mean, Are you kidding me? :P).

Let's talk about the hat!

• The topic of my PhD is titled DARLING: Deep Learning for Chemical Information Processing. The main project has been named DECIMER: Deep Learning for Chemical Image Recognition which is knitted in copper wire and put right in the middle.
• Since I am such a huge Minion fan, you may have noticed that there are a bunch of them on the hat, among which I can name Bob, Stuart, Kevin, Dave, John, and Mark.
• I like to bake and cook a lot, and my friends are always happy to be my guinea pigs when I experiment with new recipes. But they seem to love my food and cakes.
• Yes, I am a dog person. No, I am not a fan of cats. At some point in my life, if my work does not require me to travel more, I would get a Golden Retriever. We'll see!
• The big caffeine molecule is illuminated in the background because most of us like coffee and tea in the group, including me. I love "Chai" especially. Hence the teapot.
• Last but not least, since I am a photographer by passion, you could see a camera hanging from the hat, BTW the camera works as well. You can see more of my photos on Instagram at @kohulanr (shameless advertisement ;) ).

Challenges in motor skill change – Unraveling behavioral, cognitive and electrophysiological correlates of proactive interference

Beschreibung / Description:
Mein Doktorhut ist eine absolute Entdeckungslandschaft und Spielewiese, wobei es durchaus herausfordernd ist, alle kleinen Teile, Kniffe und Funktionen, die meine fantastischen Kollegen dort eingebaut haben, auf einem zweidimensionalen Foto darzustellen. Ich war mit meiner Doktorarbeit im Themengebiet der kognitiven/motorischen Psychologie unterwegs. Von außen sieht man am Hut bereits EEG-Kabel und Elektroden (3), was auf meine neurowissenschaftlichen Experimente im EEG-Labor hinweist. Die Quaste ist ein sogenanntes Beaded Rope aus dem Rope Skipping (4), da ich hier an der Uni Jena beim Unisport seit vielen Jahren mit großer Leidenschaft die Rope-Skipping-Kurse leite.

Auffällig ist natürlich die Box, die zunächst stillschweigend und stoisch auf dem Hut steht. Man möchte sie öffnen, aber Obacht: Das ist NUR möglich, wenn man zunächst die Runde Codenames (ein nicht zuletzt durch den Lockdown bekannter Spieleklassiker) erfolgreich absolviert hat (1). Gespielt wird mit Begriffen, die alle mit meiner Promotion zu tun haben, die bekannten roten und blauen Agenten sind niemand weniger als die Arbeitsgruppe inklusive Professor (der sich sogar als der Assassin ablichten lassen hat). Natürlich darf nicht einfach so zum Spaß gespielt werden. Jeder falsche Spielzug wird durch das Trinken eines Shots bestraft, wofür schon wohlüberlegt ein Shotglas (2) in gleicher Manier wie die Karten, nämlich magnetisch, am Spielfeld befestigt wurde.

Sobald die Runde geschafft ist, darf man beginnen, die Deckel zu öffnen und taucht ein in eine matroschka-artige Erlebnisreise (6) durch fotografische Zeugnisse von Tagungen, Whiteboard-Mind-Maps, Konferenzpostern, einer Nachbildung der Arbeitsstätte, unserer Mittagspausen-Tischtennistradition (5)  und vielen gemeinsamen Erlebnissen der Doktorandengruppe. Schritt für Schritt geht es in die innerste Ebene, wo noch ein absolutes Highlight wartet. In meiner Promotion beschäftigte ich mich maßgeblich mit motorischen Automatismen und der Tatsache, wie sehr es uns anstrengt, wenn wir gewohnte Automatismen nicht mehr anwenden können. Dafür führte ich sehr viele Tastaturschreibexperimente durch, bei denen ich Probanden unter Zeitdruck auf einer veränderten Tastatur schreiben ließ, auf welcher zwei Tasten in ihrer Position getauscht waren. Genau diese Herausforderung erwartete mich auf einem extra eingebauten Mini-Computer in der innersten Ebene (7). Hier haben sich die Kollegen selbst übertroffen und sozusagen DAS Experiment meiner Promotion in kleiner Form nachprogrammiert. Mit einem Touchpen werden in Form eines Spiels Buchstabe für Buchstabe getippt, wobei man zwischen der normalen und der veränderten Tastatur wählen und dabei persönliche Highscores aufstellen kann. :D Der finale Text ist ein Glückwunsch zur Promotion. Wenn man bedenkt, wie viele Monate und Nerven ich mit der Programmierung und Realisierung dieses Experimentalparadigmas im Labor verbrachte…, unglaublich. Alles in allem, ein Meisterwerk der Kreativität meiner Kollegen und eine wunderbare Sammlung von Erinnerungen an eine aufregende Zeit. Ich nenne es „Unboxing next level“. :)

Kavitationsverfahren und die Kombination mit der Ozonung zur Mikroschadstoffelimination in Wasser

Beschreibung / Description:
Der Hut adressiert vor allem die Hobbies und Interessen von Herrn Deggelmann. Im Fokus steht ein Berg (“Mount Cavitation”) mit einem Klettersteig und einem Wasserfall. Weiterhin befinden sich eine SlackLine zwischen zwei Bäumen und ein Boulderwand auf dem Hut. In Anlehnung an seine Europa-Rad-Reise von Jena nach Istanbul (3 Monate) wurde auch ein kleines Fahrrad handgefertigt und auf dem Hut platziert. Herr Deggelmann ist selbst auf dem Hut verewigt in Form einer kleinen Legofigur (mit starker Ähnlichkeit) und Lupe in der Hand, welche am Fuße des Wasserfalls auf Spurenstoffsuche geht.

Das besondere Highlight an diesem Hut ist die integrierte Seifenblaseninteraktion. Diese symbolisieren die Kavitationsblasen, die eine entscheidende Rolle in der Dissertation von Herrn Deggelmann spielen. Am Gipfelkreuz ist ein Seifenblasenring montiert der durch Heben und Senken in ein Vorratsgefäß mit Seifenlauge (versteckt im Berg) getaucht werden kann. In der höchsten Position befindet sich ein Schlauch mit Mundstück. Durch Pusten in den Schlauch kommen die Blasen dann aus der Öffnung über dem Wasserfall.

Der Hut wurde komplett in Handarbeit gefertigt (Pappe bzw. verstärktes Kunstleder umnäht mit schwarzem Jersey-Stoff) und umlaufend mit einer Kordel versehen.

Analysis and In Vitro Reconstitution of a Noncanonical Peptide Synthetase in Closthioamide Biosynthesis

Beschreibung / Description:  
We meet compounds made by living things (plants, bacteria and fungi) as Natural Products everywhere in our daily life. In studying them, we can not only understand their functions in nature, but also potentially develop them into therapeutics. The focus of my PhD was to understand how certain natural products (with antibiotic activity) are made in nature.

But a PhD journey is so much more than studying one particular topic for several years. It also prepares you to become more self-sufficient when it comes to project management, supervision of students, and responsibilities for equipment. On top of this boost in self-growth, you also gain a bunch of good friends, who will probably be there for the rest of your life – remembering the good times when you bonded over the desperation for things to just work (best case, several times in a row in the same fashion of course!).

If you are really lucky, you will also have someone like Andrea in your group, and I tell you: this is the jackpot for your PhD! Andrea is responsible for the mass spectrometers at the HKI in Jena and, in addition to her essential scientific work, she is a great emotional support to students and staff alike. She is always there for you, when you need a shoulder to cry on or someone to just agree that things suck. Of course, this also goes for happy moments. She will sometimes be happier than you when your results are great (since she is also the first one to see them, hehe!). She is a true Lab-Mom for the Hertweck Lab team members. On top of this, she is humble, friendly and considers others before herself, which is a treat you don’t find a lot in our (scientific) world.

Andrea’s work, though, does not stop here. She is the mastermind behind countless hats made over 30 years for PhD graduates. I would like you to vote for the hat she made to mark my PhD graduation, not only because it is gorgeous, but because it would show her in her last year before retirement how much (someone like) she is valued in an academic group. I know I speak for the whole Hertweck group when I say that we cannot thank her enough for her effort and endless imagination in always overseeing the hat-making process.

Being an expert milliner is something Andrea manages alongside her regular work, which she does with so much care (for example, she checks every sample for particles with a small magnifying glass - an act that is even displayed on my hat!). She usually begins planning the concept of your hat way before you even think about starting to write your thesis. Over time, with input from the group, she collects little things she can put on top of the hat to represent you, for example showing your favorite things. The highlight of the hat is for sure the puppet of the PhD student, which she makes herself. Here she even sews the clothes for the puppet. She manages to then arrange everything in a very logical way so that looking at the hats is already like a “Wimmelbild” – you keep finding new things that are so thoughtfully crafted. 

In my opinion Andrea’s hats are so special because almost every component is handcrafted, either by herself as mentioned, or by other group members coordinated by her. For my hat, she gave every group member a certain kind of paper from which all the lovely flowers were crafted. The result speaks for itself, and all the 3D printed hat gadgets cannot compare to the beauty of timely crafted wonders (in my humble opinion).

When I first saw my hat, I felt lots of excitement (and this was not only because it was right after the defense). I also felt a lot of gratitude to see such a beautiful hat, which captured the essence of my interests – reading, sewing, painting, crafting and my love for outdoor activities. I will always treasure this hat as a reminder of my time at the HKI and all the lovely people I had the pleasure to work with there. 

As already mentioned, Andrea will soon retire and unfortunately not be able to continue making these amazing hats (hopefully, she will instead spend lots of time at a beach!). It would therefore mean so much to the Hertweck Lab if one of her last hats gets the recognition it deserves and wins this contest. This award would truly be a feather in Andrea’s hat, so to speak! No matter the outcome, I wish for everyone who reads this nomination to the end, that you already have an Andrea in your life or will be lucky enough to have one in the future!

Fungal virulence attributes and epithelial responses during vaginal Candida infections

Beschreibung / Description:
The hat is made by my absolute favorite colleague and best friend Dr. Sofia Siscar Lewin (all figures made by hand using fimo clay). In the center is my favorite animal – Panda, holding the layer of epithelial cells infected with Candida and recruited neutrophils, representing the core of my PhD research. Panda is standing on the glitter staircase (symbolizing clumsiness as I often fall down stairs), which carry my famous pink traveling suitcase, coca cola zero and carrot cake. Other elements, such as ice cream, photography, traveling, and popular Serbian biscuit Plazma, represent thing that I enjoy most. Opathy is the network where I did my PhD and some photos from our meetings are laminated on the hat. Last but not least, the swan represents the well know boat Sisi from Strand22 – another witness of my clumsiness, where I fell into the water and destroyed my new phone.

An immunocompetent intestine-on-chip model as platform for the dissection of host-microbiota interaction

Beschreibung / Description
My PhD hat was created by my colleagues of my current working group at the Institute for Medical Microbiology, who made me the best hat I could ever think of. They made an enormous effort to put together all the things I am obsessed with.

In my thesis I developed an in vitro model of the human gut, grown in a plastic chip with two chambers separated by a membrane. The great thing about the model is that it can be perfused with cell culture medium and thereby mimics the blood stream and the gut movements.

The model serves as an alternative to animal models. I could never do animal experimentation, because I am a huge animal lover and the proud servant of my two cats. The dog-shaped figure is actually a cat. Pokémon are not really animals but still somewhat similar. Since my childhood I am a Pokémon fan, who occasionally enjoys a game on an emulator on the cell phone. Therefore, you can find a large Pokéball next to the cat and various Pokémon hanging from the sides.

The most prominent part of course is me flying on a broomstick between the hoops of a Quidditch pitch in front of a beautiful replica of Hogwarts. The golden snitch is attached to the end of cord and is a piece of artwork. The remaining Harry Potter reference is the lightening scar and the glasses, which exactly match my face, when I am wearing the hat. I love Harry Potter, but I am also a former real-life Quidditch player. A chaser and later on a keeper, to be exact. Quidditch was invented in the USA in 2005 and has spread throughout the world since then. Now, there are over 40 national associations and the world cup is held every two years in alternating locations. The sport is a mix of Handball, Rugby and dodge ball and is played with mixed genders. Quidditch is an inclusive sport, everyone is welcome, even if you have never done sports before. The Quidditch community is like a family, which is one of the reasons why I was immediately absorbed after my first practice with my team.

I was sorted into Rawenclaw by Potter.com, one of the four houses in Hogwarts. Rawenclaw house colours are blue and silver (or bronce according to the books). So, part of my flying body is blue, and also the lower part of the hat is covered in blue to demonstrate me belonging in Rawenclaw.

Last but not least, the small bowl with salat and brezel represents my lunch I buy in the Mensa in the UKJ at least two times per week.

Title of Dissertation:
Genome-wide functional CRISPR-Cas9 screen reveals key roles of GOLT1A and GOLT1B in the FLI-06-mediated secretion block

Description:
I did my PhD at the Leibniz Institute on aging - Fritz-Lipmann-Institute. The project, which ended up in the thesis, was a collaboration between the amazing research groups “transcriptional control of organ homeostasis” and “membrane transport”. There, I tried in more or less futile attempts to solve the mystery of FLI-06, a strange compound, which inhibits the vesicular export of proteins out of the endoplasmic reticulum by a so far unknown mechanism. In more detail, I found by using a CRISPR activation screen that overexpression of the gene GOLT1A provides the cells with complete resistance to FLI-06. This was then followed by a ton of experiments to characterize GOLT1A and to understand its role in cellular secretion and ER-stress pathways. And, I also did some research on GOLT1B, evil-twin-gene of GOLT1A.

In the center of the hat is a big green mountain, which has manyfold meanings:

1. Of course – the mountain is just a mountain! This is to symbolize my love for the great outdoors (running, hiking, cycling, climbing and gardening). Preferentially of course in some beautiful mountain range. So, on the back of the hat, a little Lego-Minion of me is climbing up to harvest some veggies form the garden.
2. The mountain is the nucleus of the cell, surrounded by the other organelles. A ski-lift-like structure transports little GOLT1A-loaded gondolas between them (nerd info: This represents the vesicular transport, which unfortunately does not go to the nucleus like illustrated here…).
3. The mountain is also a metaphor for research and my PhD time. Like, when climbing a mountain, in research you often have to work like hell without any visible progress. Obstacles are blocking the way, forcing you to take alternative paths, which are bringing you to places much better than what you have planned. But finally, you reach the summit and realize: It’s worth all the struggle!

The side of the hat, is decorated with pictures of all the unforgotten events we have enjoyed in the lab: bubble-soccer, barbeque, Christmas market, exciting lab work, team run, fascinating video conferences during corona lockdown and our legendary motto-dress-up-Tuesdays. Just to name only a few.

Not only have I achieved my PhD at Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, but I also received an awesome hat made by my colleagues at the Institute of Biodiversity. I appreciate the great efforts they have made to memorize the whole journey of my PhD.

As the hat reveals, I fished for genetic material of microbes from the central basin of an acidic iron-rich lake, located in Lusatian district of Brandenburg, Germany. The lake on the hat is the sampling lake surrounded by the trees. If you google the lake, you will get stunned by the similarity between the miniature and the real lake. The lake is surrounded by lab consumables to perform molecular examinations in the lab and the laptop to analyze the genetic information. That integrated genetic information does explain how the iron-cycling microbes shape the pelagic aggregates in the lake.

In addition to the academic part, the panda, the￥cash and the Chinese characters tell where I am from. Yes, you are right that I am from China. If you are wondering why there are dollars on my hat, please let me know if you meet my nice colleagues.

Dissertationstitel / Title of Dissertation:
Landschaftsarchäologische Untersuchungen auf Sifnos -Entstehungen, Funktionen und Bedeutungen einer hellenistischen Siedlungskammer

Beschreibung / Description:
Meine Dissertation steht am Ende eines mehrjährigen deutsch-griechischen Forschungsprojekts zur hellenistischen Archäologie auf der Kykladeninsel Sifnos.

In diesem Zusammenhang fanden mehrmonatige Feldkampagnen statt, um unterschiedlichen Fragestellungen nachzugehen. Aufenthalt und Inhalt spiegelt mein liebevoll gestalteter Doktorhut wider. Die Kappe wurde mit Fähr- und Flugtickets verschiedener Jahre und Eintrittskarten von Museen verziert. Auf der Platte finden sich Verweise auf das stets nahe Meer, die typischen Nutztiere und allgegenwärtigen Katzen. Die anstrengende Säuberung archäologischer Befunde von Vegetation wird durch das an einem Wacholder hängende Sägeblatt innerhalb eines mit Lego nachgebauten antiken Baus symbolisiert. Einen weiterer antiker Bezug entsteht durch den Altar im Hintergrund und Aristoteles in der Mitte der Platte. Am Boden aufgemalt findet sich zudem, ähnlich einem Liniennetzplan des ÖPNV, die in der Dissertation herausgearbeitete Topologie der untersuchten antiken Siedlungskammer.

Ich habe mich sehr über den Hut gefreut und freue mich, dieses sehr persönliche Objekt zu teilen.

Auf dem Hut ist folgendes zu sehen:

• Pizza – Ich bin ein leidenschaftlicher Pizzabäcker
• Brot – Ebenso liebe ich es, eigenes Brot zu backen
• Berg/Bergsteiger – Zwei meiner Lieblingshobbies: Klettern und wandern
• Fahrrad: Weiteres sportliches Hobby: Fahrradfahren
• Kaffeebohnen in Gläschen: Durch Italienurlaube und einem italienischen Chef, habe ich guten Espresso zu schätzen gelernt
• Fußball/Fußballschuhe: Weiteres sportliches Hobby von mir, was nur durch den Uni Hochschulsport gekommen ist
• Skifahrer auf Eisstielen: Kombiniert zwei meiner Lieblingsaktivitäten: Skifahren und leckeres Eis schlecken
• Wortspiel Time-Lime-Crime: Mein Kosename auf der Arbeit
• Miniaturfigur (mit Äxten bewaffnet): Charakter in einem meiner Lieblingscomputerspiele (World of Warcraft), ein Taure
• Miniaturfigur (auf einer Bombe sitzend): Charakter in einem weiteren Lieblingsspiel (League of Legends): Ziggs. Beide Figuren wurden von meinem Bruder per 3-D-Drucker gedruckt und anschließend von ihm und meinem besten Freund per Hand bemalt.
• Eiswaffel: Wiederkehrendes Element: Eis essen
• Grüne und rote Flüssigkeit: Repräsentieren das Arbeiten während meiner Promotion mit ionischen Flüssigkeiten

Bis auf den Fußball und Fußballschuh (Radiergummis), wurden alle Gegenstände auf dem Hut selbst hergestellt (Ton, Draht, Holz, Pappmaschee,…).

Die Hutwand (Hutkrone) ist mit vielen Bildern, die mit Freunden/Kollegen während meiner Promotion entstanden sind, beklebt.
