Build and Certify Competencies
The Data & AI Literacy Jena certificate program consolidates various offerings and formats related to data and artificial intelligence into a structured overall qualification. Students from all disciplines can systematically build and demonstrate competencies in data handling, ranging from foundational to advanced levels.
The program is modular:
Individual elements allow for flexible entry.
The certificate also enables students to integrate credit-bearing modules from various fields into a personalized competency profile.
Entry is possible at any time, and no specific prior knowledge is required.
Elements
The elements of the Data & AI Literacy program provide flexible, practical entry options. Each element can be completed individually and documented with a certificate of participation.
Additionally, they can be used as building blocks for the Data & AI Literacy certificate program to enhance the competency profile.
Data & AI Literacy Jena - Awareness
The Awareness element provides an online self-study course overview of key aspects of data and artificial intelligence handling. Complementing the course are hands-on sessions offering practical introductions to selected topics and tools in the fields of data and AI.
Completion:
- Successful completion of the Data Literacy Online Course
- Participation in at least 3 Hands-on Sessions (can be completed in different semesters)
Certificate:
- Certificate of participation
Data & AI Literacy Jena – Datathon
The Datathon allows participants to apply and expand their skills through real data projects. During the three-day Datathon, participants work on practical tasks from regional institutions in interdisciplinary teams.

Certificate Program Data & AI Literacy Jena (DALIJE)
The certificate program allows for structured deepening of data and AI competencies according to individual interests. By combining selected modules, participants create a personalized competency profile.
Participants acquire knowledge and skills in the following areas:
- Understanding: Technical, mathematical, and computer science fundamentals
- Applying: Use of data and AI-related methods and corresponding digital technologies
- Reflecting: Legal, ethical, and social aspects of data handling and the digitalization of society
Completion Requirements
To successfully complete the "Data & AI Literacy Jena" certificate, modules totaling at least 15 ECTS points (credit points, CP) from the catalog of creditable modules must be completed.
At least 3 CP must be earned in each of the three focus areas: "Understanding," "Applying," and "Reflecting" (see catalog for classification). The remaining CP can be freely distributed. Some modules are assigned to multiple focus areas and can be credited flexibly.
If the "Awareness" and "Datathon" modules are also completed, the "Data & AI Literacy Jena PLUS" certificate can be obtained.

How do I register for the certificate?
No formal registration is required. After successfully completing the necessary courses, you can apply for the certificate to be issued. Simply contact: dataliteracy@uni-jena.de.
Please note that formal registration is required for each individual module. When registering for modules outside your degree program, separate rules may apply (see notes above on this page).

How long do I have to complete the certificate?
You can complete the certificate level throughout your studies. The certificate can only be applied for after completing all necessary courses. The time frame for completing the individual modules is governed by the relevant study regulations or the module itself (usually 1 or max. 2 semesters, depending on the module).

Can I get credit for courses from my major?
If modules from your own degree program are listed in the catalog of creditable courses, you can use up to 5 CP for the certificate. However, this only applies to courses that are not compulsory courses in your own degree program.
