Are you looking for a suitable storage solution for data in your research project or research group? The URZ offers a range of services for different application scenarios. For international research collaborations, the services of the EUDAT Collaborative Data InfrastructureExternal link are also available.

Not sure which service best suits your requirements? Get in touch with us! We will be happy to advise you and try to find a suitable solution.

University services of the URZ

  • Individual storage space for affiliates

We provide you with individual storage space for data that should not be shared with others.

Your data is subject to regular backups and can be restored by yourself if necessary (snapshot functionality). As your data is stored centrally in the University Computer Centre, you need an internet connection to access your data. This is possible at any time within the university network, e.g. in offices, PC pools, or the university-wide WLAN. A VPN de connection is required for access outside of the university-wide data network.

    • Access via network drive folder: \\storage.uni-jena.de\home\a\ab12cde
      • "a" stands for the first letter of your university account "ab12cde"
    • Further information: URZ WikiExternal link
  • Storage space for research groups

If you want to store shared documents in one place so that several people at Friedrich Schiller University have access to this data, you can apply for storage space for research groups. In contrast to the Uni Cloud, however, several people cannot work collaboratively on one document.

Your data is subject to regular backups and can be restored by yourself if necessary (snapshot functionality). All authorised users must have a university account to access the data. As your data is stored centrally in the University Computer Centre, you need an internet connection to access your data. This is possible at any time within the university network, e.g. in offices, PC pools, or the university-wide WLAN. A VPN de connection is required for access outside of the university-wide data network.

  • Uni-Cloud - Online storage and more

If you want to store and edit documents and files collaboratively with colleagues within your research group regardless of where you are working, the university's cloud solution is recommended.

Your data is stored in the University Computer Centre. The same data is available on all devices that you connect to the cloud. You can therefore edit your data on one of your devices even without an internet connection. As soon as you have an internet connection again, the data is synchronised with the cloud again. This means that the current status is maintained across all your stationary and mobile devices and can be accessed at any time.

  • Temporary file upload for data exchange

If you want to share large files with your project partners, you can use the temporary file upload. Files are made available to other users via a unique link provided by e-mail. The link is active for a selectable time span of 48 hours up to 3 months. The storage capacity is limited to 15 GB.

The service is available to all employees and students of the University.

There is also an upload option via the cloud service. Corresponding links to your own cloud folders can also be distributed individually to non-university users.

  • Version management with GitLab

If your research group develops software and the code undergoes continuous changes or you are working on publications in LaTeX, you may consider a version control system.

To keep track of continuous changes, GitLabExternal link as a version control system allows a detailed view of the changes made over time (including the date and author of each change). This enables controlled development, easy merging of individual changes and reverting to an earlier version.

  • Data retention for research data that is not actively used

Do you have large amounts of research data that are no longer needed for active research? Does the data take up expensive storage space but should not be deleted?

With the long-term data retention service of the University Computer Centre, you can comply with the DFG's requirements and guidelines. Data can be stored for up to 10 years on request. Before the retention period expires, we will contact you to clarify the extension or deletion of the data.

The data is stored on tape drives via sFTP. The service is available to all employees.

  • Further storage options for servers, data and systems

Provision of server systems (virtual machine / server hosting)
Do you want to store and analyse your data in a subject-specific application and need infrastructure to operate this application? Then let the URZ provide you with a virtual server. This avoids time-consuming procurement processes and the expense of operating your own server hardware. You install and configure the application you need and administer the virtual system provided on your own.

    Server Backup
You operate your own servers in your institution and would like to back up your server data at regular intervals so that it can be restored in the event of a loss. The University Computer Centre offers you the option of integrating your servers into our central backup system.

    Database Hosting
Would you like to store large amounts of information from your research in a structured and logically grouped manner in one place and then analyse or integrate it for different research questions? The URZ operates various database management systems, including regularly backups of your data. You administer your database and your data on your own.
