Data as a common good for excellent research, organised by the scientific community in Germany
The aim of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) is to systematically catalogue research data, secure it in the long term and make it internationally accessible in compliance with the FAIR principlesExternal link.
As part of this programme 26 subject-specific consortia and one consortium for basic services in the NFDI are currently funded by the federal and state governments.
The Friedrich Schiller University Jena is a member of the NFDI e.V. and many researchers of the University are involved in the NFDI. A comprehensive list can be found in the table below. The Digital Research Services team and the Thuringian Competence Network for Research Data ManagementExternal link support the participating institutions.
General information on the NFDI

Foundation of the NFDI
In the video "What is the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI)"External link, the DFG explains how the NFDI is positioned in the national research data landscape, what its goals are, how it is structured, what the role of the consortia are and what are the requirements placed on them.
The initial 26 consortia were selected by the Joint Science Conference (Gemeinsame Wissenschaftskonferenz GWK) in three rounds of calls between 2020-2022.
The second funding phase began in 2025 for the first nine consortia. A detailed timetable can be found on the DFG's information pageExternal link. This page also provides an overview of the funded NFDI consortia including contact persons at the DFG.
