The way from the laboratory to the doctorate

In the natural and life sciences, the lab is often where it all begins. Laboratory work is an integral part of many students’ academic training. From there, different paths can unfold: some graduates move into industry or other professional fields, while others continue on an academic path — pursuing a PhD, habilitation and eventually a professorship. And even then, Lab and Academia are not an either-or: professors may still spend time working in the lab alongside teaching, supervising and leading research.
“From Lab to Academia” describes one possible and often familiar trajectory — and the personal stories behind it. In our Career Talk, five scientists from different disciplines of the natural and life sciences will share insights into their individual careers and experiences along the way.
We’ll talk about PhDs and professorships, publications, networking, international experiences, work-life balance, mental health, science communication and AI in research — as well as the challenges, doubts and decisions that can shape an academic career.
