This research focus brings together expertise from three faculties at the FSU, the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research, the Senckenberg Institute for Plant Form and Function Jena, and partners such as the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research Leipzig/Halle. The aim is to understand the emergence, change, and preservation of biological diversity in close connection with geological,
climatic, and ecological processes.

    Research investigates global patterns of biological diversity and develops strategies to halt the loss of species and habitats. The focus is on terrestrial ecosystems and the interaction between plants, animals, and microorganisms.

    The focus is on processes such as weathering, soil formation, nutrient cycles, and climate change. Interdisciplinary collaboration between biology, chemistry, and geosciences enables new insights into complex interactions between the biosphere and the geosphere.
