Programme content

‘What would happen if…’ you studied Business Analytics, for example? These considerations would be part of your daily work, because this field of study is all about using cutting-edge technology to evaluate future scenarios based on the analysis of problems and data. You will examine the current situation to prepare your company for the future and help out in decision-making processes – with the constant aim of identifying and ultimately preventing potential problems. You will learn about the overlapping fields of business administration, mathematics and computer science to meet current and future requirements in an increasingly digitized world.

You will be able to specialize by choosing a focus: ‘Optimization’ or ‘Stochastics’. While the field of ‘Optimization’ focuses on operations research and mathematical optimization, ‘Stochastics’ deals more with statistics and mathematical stochastics. It’s completely up to you!

How about another look in our crystal ball? If you study ‘Business Analytics’, you will enrol on a future-oriented programme in the age of big data (growing volumes of data) and the extensive digitization of industrial production (Industry 4.0).

Structure

Our bachelor’s programme is the first degree qualifying graduates to work in their profession. The standard length of the study programme is six semesters, and different types of courses are offered for each module (e.g. seminars, lectures or exercises).

In this single-subject Bachelor’s programme, the focus is on one subject comprising 180 credits (ECTS for short; 1 ECTS = 30 hours for attendance, preparation and follow-up work, private study, assessed coursework and examinations).

You can choose from eight focus areas within the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration at Friedrich Schiller University Jena. If you choose ‘Business Analytics’ as your focus, the basic part of your course will be centred around Business Administration and Business Information Systems. When it comes to specializing, you can choose between Optimization and Stochastics. The focus is structured as follows:

You can complete the internship either before the start of your studies, during one of your mid-term breaks or during a semester (by applying for a semester on leave).

Our University also offers the following focus areas: Standard Focus, Business Administration, Economics, Business Information Systems, Information and Management Sciences, Business and Economics Education Studies I and Business and Economics Education Studies II. You can change your focus during your studies.

By the way: There is a mathematics bridging course to help you prepare for your studies. We strongly advise all students to attend.

3 When choosing required elective modules for your focus area, you have to take at least 33 credit points and at least one of the following seminars: Operations Management; Analysis of Business Decisions; or Business Information Systems.
