The Secondary School Teacher Training (Regelschule) programme has been increased from 270 credit points to 300 credit points as of the winter semester 2024/25 . If you are interested in the German language and literature, the German teaching degree programme is the right choice for you. After all, your future task will be to convey enjoyment and skills in these subject areas|field to pupils. At the University of Jena, you will learn the necessary tools and knowledge for this.
In literary studies , you will gain an overview of key literary epochs, authors and their texts, basic analytical techniques and literary theory. In linguistics, you will acquire systematic knowledge ranging from linguistic sounds and grammatical structures to the entire text and conversation as well as language change. In German didactics, key issues relating to the planning, implementation and reflection of German lessons are discussed. Unique in Germany in this form are cooperative events between didactics and literary and linguistic studies, in which didactic issues are addressed from a didactic perspective with a view to school practice.
In addition to the basic courses, you can develop your own profile in elective modules according to your interests: From the classics of German-language poetry to modern and contemporary literature, from Thuringian dialects to language acquisition and linguistic politeness to probability-based grammar, from classic children's and young adult literature to computer games, virtual reality applications and artificial intelligence - we offer a wide and constantly changing range of courses that you can enrich with your contributions.
You complete the teacher training programme at the University of Jena with the First State Examination. The standard period of study|regular programme length is ten semesters in total, during which various types of courses (e.g. seminars, lectures or tutorials) are offered for the individual modules. The teacher training programme is based on the Jena model, which is characterised by a five-monthExternal link school placement semesterExternal link in the fifth or sixth semester.

A total of 300 credit points (ECTS)|ECTS credits (1 ECTS = 30 hours of attendance, preparation and follow-up work|follow-up activity, study and assessed coursework and examinations) must be completed.

The distances are short in Jena. The campus and many university buildings are located in the city centre. The Institute of German Linguistics is directly adjacent to the Botanical Gardens and the Powder Tower. From here it is only a few steps to the Thuringian University and State Library and the Institute of German Literature.
Career opportunities:
The teaching qualification completed in Thuringia is recognised|to credit in all other federal states upon formal request to the respective Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs. You can apply to the Ministries of Education and Cultural Affairs of other federal states both for the preparatory service (Referendariat) and for employment in the teaching profession (after completing the second state examination). In Jena, the teacher training course includes an introductory internship lasting 240 hours. You should reflect on your educational experience in dealing with children and young people in order to review your career aspirations and make a conscious decision. It makes sense to complete the introductory internship before starting your studies, but it can also be completed before registering for the internship semester (before the start of the third semester). You can also have work you have already done with children and young people recognized.
